In Conversation: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In Conversation: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Online

During the month of May, join us to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Month by reading, listening, learning, and discussing topics in the history of AAPI communities in the U.S. Each week we will focus on a historical topic by reading articles, listening to podcasts, or watching videos before meeting to discuss what we've learned. See the list of topics and articles for discussion below. Please register online.

Week 1: Immigration and Exclusion Acts. Please read "America Was Eager for Chinese Immigrants. What Happened?" by Michael Luo and "History forgot the 1871 Los Angeles Chinese massacre" by Frank Shyong

Week 2: Japanese Internment. Please watch George Takei's TED Talk "Why I love a country that once betrayed me" and read "How a long-lost kimono unearthed a family secret" by the BBC.

Week 3: The Myth of the Model Minority. Please watch Alice Li's TED Talk "Why Asian Americans are not the Model Minority" and read "The real reasons the U.S. became less racist toward Asian Americans" by Jeff Guo
