Kids ages two and up with a caregiver, join us for a sensory adaptive story time. We will reduce sensory input with dimmer lighting and quieter music, while engaging the senses with a highly interactive story time incorporating props and movement activities. Enjoy about twenty minutes of story time followed by sensory play using sensory bins and toys. This program thoughtfully considers the needs of neurodivergent children but welcomes all children to participate.

No registration required.

What to Expect

  • Story time usually includes two books, interspersed with songs, rhymes, movement or props like egg shakers and scarves.
  • Caregivers sit with children during story time.
  • After story time, kids may stay and play with sensory bins and toys for about 20 minutes. Some toys and bins may include chokeable pieces, so please take care and make sure to supervise children.

Sensory Information

  • Room may be moderately busy or crowded, depending on attendance.
  • Most overhead lights will be off, and other lighting will be used.
  • There will be recorded music, singing, sound from props like egg shakers and rhythm sticks, but volume on recorded music will be turned down compared to other story times.
  • Some sensory bins may have a lingering odor of vinegar.

Supports

  • Seating is carpet squares on floor, but chairs are available.
  • Participants are welcome to leave early, or take a break and rejoin story time as needed.
  • Fidgets, headphones, and any other supports are welcome.
  • Some wobble cushions are available if seated movement is helpful.
