In conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count, preschoolers, ages 2-5, accompanied by an adult, are invited to visit the Saratoga Spa State Park's Creekside Classroom Environmental Education Center. The program will begin around the fire with a few bird-related stories, followed by a craft. Environmental Educator, Allie Schweizer, will lead families on a brief nature hike. There will be an opportunity to explore the center and count the birds as they visit the birdfeeders. Afterwards, if there is snow, we will have a brief snow play activity. Please register each child who will be attending (adults do not have to register) either online, in-person at the library, or by phoning 518-584-7860, ext. 305. Siblings are welcome to attend, but they must register as well.
What to Expect:
- Drive with your adult to the Creekside Classroom in the Spa State Park (directions below)
- Sit indoors by the wood stove, or if the weather is nice, by the outdoor firepit and listen to the librarian read a story and play some birdsongs.
- Indoors, you can touch the animal furs, see a turtle, look at the birds in the bird feeder and color your own set of binoculars.
- Later, the Park Educator will lead you outdoors and let you help feed the birds.
- If there is snow, there will be snow toys to play with
Sensory:
- There may be smoke blowing from the fire pit
- It may be cold. Dress warmly and wear boots
- The binoculars will make the birds seem larger
Supports:
- You can go indoors to get warm or leave early.
- Patrons are encouraged to bring their own fidgets or comfort items as needed.
