October 5 through October 11 is Banned Books Week. Visit our Banned Books Week display on the first floor of the library, and stop at the library Information Desk to pick up your Banned Books Week Challenge card and start checking off your tasks:

  1. Send a letter (or email) to your senator or representative urging them to protect the freedom to read by supporting librarian and teacher efforts to keep books on the shelves for any reader who may need them (find talking points and locate your reps here: https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/toolkit/)
  2. Attend your local school board or library board meeting. Saratoga Springs School District has Board meetings on September 25 and October 9. SSPL Board meets on October 14. Check other local libraries' schedules, too.
  3. Check out and read a Banned Book (https://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks/top10)
  4. Watch a documentary about book bans: https://pen.org/book-bans-hit-the-big-screen-6-documentaries-take-on-educational-censorship/
  5. Attend a library program

Completed Challenge cards must be turned in by the end of Banned Books Week on Saturday, October 11. Completed cards will be entered into a drawing to win a t-shirt or tote bag.
