Dirty Water: The Murk, the Muck, and Bad Luck in Erie Canal Research

Dirty Water: The Murk, the Muck, and Bad Luck in Erie Canal Research In-Person

Researching the Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo can present some interesting bits of history. Some of these can shed light on the murk, some can clear away the muck, and others prove just how lucky some folks could be. However, in the research there are also facts that darken the waters, stir up the confusion, and demonstrate that bad luck could take away prosperity as well as lives. This program will share a handful of researched topics that demonstrate both. David Brooks of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will share interesting bits of history that uncover themselves during canal related research. From drownings to heroic rescues, from graft, corruption, prostitution and engineering disasters, these stories and characters are sure to amuse, befuddle, and relate to general audiences. No registration required.
